Bring More Parenting Skill-Building Programs to Your Community

As you may have learned previously by clicking on “locations in your community,” you learned that parenting skill-building programs are taught at a variety of places in a community. Some of those places are schools, churches, synagogues, child guidance centers, hospitals and HMOs (health maintenance organizations).

You can help to bring parenting skill-building programs to these types of organizations in your community by speaking with the leaders at these organizations.

Contact a leader at a local organization (a school principal, a priest, pastor or rabbi, an agency director, etc.). Ask if they are currently offering any parenting skill-building programs. If so, see if what they offer is what you are looking for.

If you are informed they are not offering any skill-building program, or if the leader does not seem knowledgeable about such programs, orient them to go online to the CICC website to learn about parenting skill-building programs (
www.ciccparenting.org, go to menu item, Parenting Skill-Building Programs).

Once the leader has learned about such programs, the leader may say that they look really good, but they don’t know how to bring such programs to their school, church or agency. You can tell them that there are three basic ways:

1. They can obtain the Instructor Kit for a program and have a parenting instructor from their organization use the Instructor Kit materials to run the program through their organization.

2. They can send a qualified staff member, volunteer or consultant to take a parenting instructor training workshop to learn how to deliver the program and to get the Instructor Kit.

3. They can contract with a qualified instructor or with a local effective parenting organization to have them deliver the program for the parents and the families that they serve.

Then re-orient the leader back to CICC to learn how to obtain the Instructor Kit, or find a instructor training workshop, or a local instructor or effective parenting organization with which they can work. The toll-free number is 1 (800) 325-2422.
